Game One - MC - 28; Lafayette County - 0
"We have a very talented football team. We have a lot of speed on both sides of the ball. We have a lot of size on the line of scrimmage, and we are very good at quarterback, I really don't have any major concerns," said Madison Central Head Football Coach Bobby Hall.
Peyton Johnson threw touchdown passes of 65 yards to Tobias Singleton and four yards to Josh Crowder and ran for another score, leading the Jags to a season-opening 28-0 victory over Lafayette County Friday in Oxford. The Jaguars also scored on an 8-yard run by Marco Taylor, with all the scoring coming in the first half.
Game Two - Picayune - 32; MC - 22
The Maroon Tide jumped out to a 16-7 halftime lead, thanks to a 37-yard field goal by Riso and a 12-yard scoring run by Bailey in the first half as well as a 15-yard scoring run by Jamal Hall.
Madison Central got two scoring runs from fullback Michael Johnson, a 43-yarder in the second quarter and a 10-yarder in the third that cut the deficit to 16-14.
“Picayune truly outplayed us,” Madison Central head coach Bobby Hall said. “We were a really bad football team for most of the night, because we made way too many mistakes. We were lucky to be as close as we were, but we still had a chance to win. They just made more plays at the end.”
The Jags would tie the game at 22-22 early in the fourth frame thanks to a 3-yard touchdown run by Temarco Taylor and a two point toss from Johnson to Ladarrius Boyd.
“We got tired in the second half, because we have so many players that go both ways,” veteran Picayune coach Dodd Lee said. “His (Riso) kick was big, because I really didn't have a good feeling when they tied it up. We just didn't give up, and anybody should be happy to get a win over a team that is that good.”
Apologies Curtis Rockwel
Game Three - MC - 48; McComb - 0
The Jags jumped on McComb less than a minute into the game. Madison Central recieved the opening kick-of and three plays later scored on a Peyton Johnson 60-yard run option. The 2 & 1 Jaguars led 28-nothing at the end of the first quarter and never looked back in a decisive 48-nothing win.
Game Four - MC - 24; Tupelo - 21
In a driving rain, the Jaguars came from two touchdowns behinds with less than five minutes to play
and forced the game into overtime. The cats go on to "upset" number four Tupelo in Elvis' hometown.
MC won the overtime toss of the coin and Head Coach Bobby Hall decided to go on defense. The Jags bow-up and hold the Golden Wave. Mitch Huff hits a 27-yard field goal to put the Jags at 3 and 1 on the season going into district play against rival Clinton at home next week.
“I told our guys all week, ‘Hey, you’re going to Big Boy Street now,’ ” said Coach Hall, whose team celebrated jubilantly at midfield after the win. “I said, ‘You’ve got 48 minutes to prove you belong.’ I’ll let other people decide now if we deserve to be there.”
Game Five - MC - 51; Clinton - 14
After letting the mighty Arrows take the opening kick-off inside the MC 10-yard line, the Jags did not let Clinton score after the first quarter and go on to a huge district win over their cross-town rival.
"We didn't play well in the first half but we made some good halftime adjustments," said Head Coach Bobby Hall.
The Jags' multi-dimensional offense rolled to the largest margin of victory in the history of the storied rivalry. "They sold out on stopping the pass, so we went to the run. We don't care if we run or pass, we'll take whatever the opponent gives us," Hall added.
This MC football team is not the same team, even though most of the starters returned from last year. "This team has come further than any other team that I've coached," said Hall. "They have incredible work ethic, not many people were at the school at 6 a.m. Monday-Thursday in June and July, but these players were."
Coach Hall says this is a big win for his Jaguars, but it's just one game and there is a lot of football to play before the season ends in December.
Game Six - MC - 47; Murrah - 7
The Jags overcame five first half turnovers to continue their domanance over the Murrah Mustangs and lead the series between the two teams 13-1. The first play from scrimmage resulted in a 49-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Peyton Johnson to Tobias Singleton.
Josh Cowder returned a Murrah punt for a TD following the 'stangs first possession and were out to a quick 14-0 lead. However, MC let the Mustangs hang around and led 17-7 at the half.
The second half was another story as Madison Central opened a can of whoop butt, shutting down a scrappy Mustang offense.
So far this season, Madison Central high-powered offense is averaging 37 points per game, while their stingy defense is only allowing the Jag opponents to score only 12 points per game.
Game Seven - MC - 28; Warren Central - 10
One of the most storied rivalries in central Mississippi is the 2-5A Madison Central/Warren Central match-up. The eighth-ranked Jaguars were bitten by the turn-over bug but settled down in the second half to remain undefeated in 2-5A.
The river city Vikings have never beaten Coach Bobby Hall during his tenure at Madison Central.
Game Eight - MC - 28; Provine - 7
Madison Central maintained its number eight ranking this week and after two weeks of turn-over troubles, focused on ball control. The Jags had no turn-overs against veteran high school coach Willie Collins' Rams.
Last year, Provine dealt Coach Bobby Hall and his youthful MC team its only 2-5A loss. This year, a scrappy Provine defense allowed the Jags only 14 first-half points but MC dominated the second half as fullback Michael Johnson gained yardage in chunks.
The other half of the Johnon & Johnson duo, Peyton, continued his mastery of the triple mid-line option and led the Jaguars to their fourth district win and sixth consecutive victory.
Game Nine - MC - 48; Grenada - 7
Grenada rejoined district 2-5A this year and Chargers are trying to find their success of years past. Madison Central Head Coach Bobby Hall and his Jaguars were not looking for anything other than a win against their renewed district foe. MC dominated in Grenada and extended its winning streak to seven.
Game Ten - MC - 42; Northwest Rankin - 22
The game that was supposed to be a match of wits and wills for the 2-5A district championship but it just did not develop. The combination of turn-overs and MC's high-octain offense left the Cougars in the rear-view mirror in the early stages of the game.
"We knew if they tried to cover us with just one guy high, we could go vertical in our passing game," said MC Head Coach Bobby Hall.
The Jags had more than 450 yards of total offense and the triple mid-line option worked to near perfection. Madison Central locked in its fourth district championship in the last five years. It's the second for Coach Hall during his three years at MC.
"I've got to give all the credit to our players. They are dedicated and have great work ethic," said Hall. "This team is able to adjust to what our opponents give us and we are able to exploit their weaknesses."
Quarterback Peyton Johnson passed for four touchdowns and rushed for another. Northwest was bitten by the turn-over bug in the second half as Jaguar Pat Williams had two interceptions. In all, the Cougars gave the ball to the Jaguars four times to stop significant drives.
Madison Central had the game well in hand early in the third quarter and Northweat put up two touchdowns late in the game. "We throttled down in the second half," Hall added.
Madison Central will host round-0ne of the 5A play-offs against a yet-to-be determined opponent, which appears to be Southaven.
Game Eleven - MC - 49; Greenville - 0
The Jaguars continue to roll through district 2-5A with a good ole fashion MC beat down. Madison Central's first string offensive skill players did not play the second half and the Jags used four different quarterbacks in the route.
"We were able to put in the shotgun and try some things that we hadn't been able to experiment with in a game situation," said third-year Head Coach Bobby Hall.
The Jaguars did not have a let down after repeating as District Champions with a previous-week win over Northwest Rankin.
Game Twelve - MC - 14; Southaven - 9
After averaging 38 points per game, Madison Central's anemic offensive was able to score only 14 points and pick up but 141 total yards.
"We just didn't play well on offense," said Head Coach Bobby Hall. "We did some things that we haven't done all year, like an illegal block 30 yards behind the play."
The Jags brutal defense made up for the offensive weaknesses with three, fourth down stops in their own territory. "Sometimes we just have to win ugly," Hall added.
It's the first playoff victory for Madison Central during Hall's tenure. MC quarterback Peyton Johnson was hurt on the second play of the second half. Coach Hall says he suffered a concussion and "stinger" but will be able to play in the second round of the playoffs at home against the Olive Branch Conquistadors.
The Jags fumbled five times, losing possession three times. Defensive back DeAndre Wilkinson had two interceptions for the Jaguars, while back-up quarterback Josh Crowder had punts of 76 and 60 yards. All of the scoring occurred in the second quarter except for a field goal in the second half by Southaven.
Game Thirteen - MC - 50; Olive Branch - 49 3-OT
The Madison Central Jaguars came from a 10-point deficit with six minutes left in the game, to tie put the second round play-off game into overtime. In the third overtime, Olive Branch missed a point-after and the Jaguars avenge a first round play-off loss two years ago in Jaguar Head Coach Bobby Hall's first year at MC.
"We are a team of destiny and I believe that this is our year," said Hall.
To win a state championship; a team must work hard, have great talent and some luck. "We were lucky when 24 (safety Rod Woodson) got hurt and did not return," Hall added.
Woodson and Quarterback Clint Wilson each sustained ankle injuries in the first half.
In 1999, the Jags had incredible work ethic, talent and caught some breaks.
So far, MC is 12 and 1, has won 11 straight, the 2-5A division title and went undefeated in the district for the first time since the 1999 state championship year.
